EU-IANUS organized a roundtable at the 9th Pan-European Conference on International Relations. The conference took place in Giardini Naxos (Italy) last week and was organized by the European International Studies Association and the University of Catania.

The EU-IANUS’ roundtable ‘A functional power in a geopolitical world’ was chaired by Anna Herranz (Maastricht University) and the participants wre Jozef Bátora (Comenius University in Bratislava), Sandra Lavenex (Université de Genève), Jan Orbie (Ghent University), Knud Erik Jørgensen (Aarhus University) and Oriol Costa (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona).

The participants discussed the influence of the European Union in a liberal international order in crisis. Whilst for some years the EU enjoyed of a propitious an international arena for its sort of influence, now rules are less stable and competition for power is more open. This roundtable addressed the implications of being a functional power in an increasingly geopolitical world.
